Basic Troubleshooting

Delete temporary files: Disk Cleanup for Windows 7 / 8; Manage Storage for Windows 10CCleaner, a free utility for cleaning your system up

Defragment your hard drive (note that on Windows 7 and above systems, defragmentation should be happening automatically): Wikipedia – Disk Defragmenter (Windows).

Note – SSD drives do not defragment in the traditional sense, but windows does need to re-order and defrag the index files of the drive, not the files themselves. It is now acceptable to use the built-in defragmentation tools for SSD drives but not 3rd party software.

Run a check disk (chkdsk): Windows Vista or Windows 7; Windows 8; Windows 10

Antivirus Scanners

Windows 10 comes with Defender built in and active, and is a very effective (and free) product. The advantage commercially paid for tools such as Norton Security, Kaspersky, ESET and Trend Micro have is that they are updated much more frequently.

Windows 7 support is ending on 14 Jan 2020 and if you intend to keep using Windows 7 it is critical you install a 3rd party program to keep your system and data safe. Please be aware that there is no virus scanner that can protect your system 100%, so backups are also critical in case the worst happens.

Check NBN Availability

The NBN is scheduled to be completed by 2021, so you may already have it at your address. There are areas that will not be physically connected. You can check your address to see the status of NBN. Note that once your address is NBN ready you have a limited time to switch.

Alternatives such as mobile broadband should also be looked into, particularly if you are only on the basic or starter plans for NBN.

Four Quarters Computing can assist you in all these areas, contact us for more information.
